Choosing a Primary Care Physician

Choosing a Primary Care Physician

As a GlobalHealth member, you must use plan providers to get your covered services. This starts with choosing a Primary Care Physician from the list of physicians in the Provider Directory. For more information on the professional qualifications of our providers, please call Customer Service at 1-877-280-5600. You and each member of your family may choose the same Primary Care Physician, or you may have different Primary Care Physicians. If you do not choose a PCP, one will automatically be assigned to you.

Certain primary care providers are affiliated with integrated delivery systems or other provider groups (such as independent practice associations or IPAs and physician hospital organizations, etc.), and members who select these providers will generally be referred to specialists and hospitals within those systems or groups. However, if a system or group does not include a provider qualified to meet your medical needs, you may request to have services provided by non-system or non-group providers. Your request will require prior authorization.

Your relationship with your Primary Care Physician is an important one. That is why we strongly recommend that you choose a Primary Care Physician close to your home or work. Having your Primary Care Physician nearby makes receiving medical care and developing a trusting and open relationship much easier.

Once you have chosen your Primary Care Physician, we recommend that you have all of your medical records transferred to his/her office. This will give your Primary Care Physician access to your medical history and make him/her aware of any existing health conditions you may have.

Your Primary Care Physician will coordinate all of your medical care to see that you get the care you need when you need it, whether the care is delivered in the doctor's office, or in another facility. He/she will also authorize any specialty care you may need to ensure the continuity of your healthcare. Your Primary Care Physician must pre-authorize all inpatient and outpatient services at a contracting facility, except emergency and urgent care services.

Be sure to let your Primary Care Physician know your health plan is GlobalHealth every time you call or visit your doctor's office by showing your GlobalHealth membership ID card.

You may contact GlobalHealth's Customer Service Department if you have special needs, such as linguistic or translation issues, and require assistance in accessing health care services.
